Work to convert existing overhead power lines to underground cables around the Arunachaleswara temple in Tiruvannamalai is nearing completion, with approximately 90 percent of the project finished. This initiative, undertaken by Tangedco, aims to enhance safety for devotees, particularly during major festival seasons. The conversion of overhead cables in the immediate vicinity of the temple is projected for completion before the upcoming Karthigai Deepam festival.
On Wednesday, J. Radhakrishnan, Chairman and Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation, along with Tangedco officials, inspected the temple premises and surrounding areas to review safety measures for pilgrims. The project spans approximately 2.6 kilometers, implemented in two phases around the temple area, and involves the removal of an estimated 600-700 electrical poles. Officials state that this removal is expected to create additional road space on currently narrow streets.
While the conversion around the temple is prioritized, the broader work of removing electrical poles along the entire path is slated for completion within six months. The Tiruvannamalai Corporation, including its newly added areas, serves about one lakh power consumers. The town attracts a large number of visitors, with approximately 40 lakh devotees reported during the 2024 Maha Deepam festival.
