Former U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated his intent to pursue a $1 billion lawsuit against the BBC. The potential legal action stems from an alleged "serious error" involving an edited speech featured in a BBC documentary, which Trump stated "you can’t allow people to do that." The BBC has confirmed it will issue a response "in due course."
The proposed lawsuit has elicited reactions from UK political figures. Labour leader Keir Starmer affirmed his commitment to a "strong, independent BBC" and urged the broadcaster to "get its house in order" regarding editorial standards, though he did not request Trump drop the legal challenge. Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey characterized Trump's action as an attempt to "destroy our BBC" and criticized the Conservative party for allegedly undermining the institution.
Concurrently, Members of Parliament and BBC staff have advocated for the removal of board member Robbie Gibb, appointed in 2021. This development coincides with comments from outgoing Director General Tim Davie addressing the "weaponisation" of criticism directed at the broadcaster.
