Renowned Tamil filmmaker Bharathiraja, often referred to as ‘Iyakkunar Imayam’ (Pinnacle among Directors), passed away on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at a private hospital in Chennai. Widely recognized as a significant figure in Tamil cinema, he was credited with pioneering a new wave of realism and his distinctive portrayal of rural Tamil Nadu life. His film, ’16 Vayathinile’, is noted for signaling a new narrative approach in the industry.
During his extensive career, Bharathiraja received numerous accolades, including six National Film Awards, four Filmfare Awards (South), six Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, and a Nandi Award. His notable filmography includes ‘Karuthamma’, which earned him a National Award, and ‘Mudhal Mariyathai’. He also collaborated with industry figures such as K. Balachander and Sivaji Ganesan, and was awarded the Best Picture Award for his 2003 film ‘Eera Nilam’ at the State Film Awards in 2006.
