In a recent boxing event held in Saudi Arabia, David Benavidez successfully defended his WBC Light-Heavyweight Championship against challenger Anthony Yarde. The bout concluded in the seventh round when the referee stopped the contest following a sustained series of punches from Benavidez, during which Yarde was knocked down. Benavidez, aged 28, maintained his undefeated professional record, which now stands at 31 wins with 25 knockouts.
The fight saw Benavidez assert control after an initial measured pace. Yarde sustained a blow to the nose, resulting in visible bleeding, prior to the referee's intervention. Yarde, 34, stated after the fight that he considered the contest competitive and identified a quick punch to his nose as a significant moment, also noting a subsequent hit while he was down, which led to a two-point deduction for Benavidez.
This marked Anthony Yarde's third unsuccessful attempt to secure a world title, having previously challenged for championships in 2019 and 2022. Following his victory, Benavidez announced his intention to move to the cruiserweight division to challenge Gilberto Ramirez for the WBA and WBO titles on May 2, with the objective of becoming a three-weight world champion.
