Delhi Readies for Cloud Seeding Amidst Artificial Rain Forecast

The Delhi government is preparing for the potential generation of artificial rain through cloud seeding, with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta indicating October 29 as a target date. The weather department forecasts cloud presence between October 28 and 30, conditions deemed favorable for the operation. Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa confirmed that IIT Kanpur conducted a trial cloud seeding flight, during which flares were fired between Khekra and Burari, and over the Badli area, utilizing pyro techniques.

Cloud seeding is a scientific process where scientists inject substances such as silver iodide, potassium iodide, dry ice (solid carbon dioxide), liquid propane, or salts into clouds. These substances aim to mirror ice nuclei, stimulating the formation and growth of water droplets to induce precipitation. The amount of rain generated depends on the number of ice nuclei within the cloud and the availability of water. This technique is typically employed in areas aiming to increase rainfall.
