Calls for the declaration of the cow as India's national animal have gained support from former Vice-President Mohammad Hamid Ansari. The former VP expressed that such a measure could help resolve underlying issues. This advocacy originates from various Muslim organizations, including demands reiterated by figures like Madani and Maulana Khalid Rashid Farangi Mahali, a senior executive member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board and Chairman of the Islamic Centre of India.
Proponents of the proposal state that recognizing the cow as the national animal would acknowledge Hindu religious sentiments and could mitigate the political exploitation associated with cow slaughter. Maulana Farangi Mahali further suggested the implementation of a single, uniform nationwide law prohibiting cow slaughter. Maulana Yasoob Abbas, national general secretary of the All India Shia Personal Law Board, also affirmed the validity of the demand, stressing the government's role in addressing it earnestly.
