A judicial commission, constituted by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), is scheduled to begin its inquiry into the events that led to violence and the deaths of four civilians during street protests on September 24 in Leh, Ladakh. The commission, headed by Chauhan, will commence meeting individuals and conducting hearings in Melongthang, Leh, from October 25 to 28. The Department of Law and Justice, Leh, has called upon interested and aggrieved parties to provide their testimony.
Security arrangements for the inquiry proceedings are being monitored by the Senior Superintendent of Police, Leh. The civilian fatalities had prompted two Ladakh-based organizations, the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), to withdraw from discussions with the Centre. A judicial inquiry was a key demand from these groups to resume dialogue, and talks between the Centre and Ladakh groups recommenced on October 22 following the MHA's announcement of the commission.
