A drone strike has reportedly killed at least 30 people at a displacement shelter in El Fasher, western Sudan. The incident took place at the Dar al-Arqam displacement centre, located on university grounds within the besieged city.
According to the Resistance Committee for El Fasher, a local activist group, the strike was carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group. El Fasher holds strategic importance as the last state capital in the Darfur region not yet captured by the RSF.
The ongoing conflict in Sudan has resulted in severe humanitarian consequences, with reports of over 150,000 fatalities, more than 14 million people displaced, and nearly 25 million experiencing acute hunger. Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, expressed deep concern over the alleged RSF disregard for civilian protection in El Fasher, condemning attacks on civilian objects, including displacement shelters, hospitals, and mosques, and urging adherence to international law. Türk also called upon the RSF and all conflict parties to heed lessons from the recent conviction of Ali Kushayb, a former leader of the Janjaweed militia, from which the RSF originated.
