Karnataka has recorded significant crop damage across more than 8.60 lakh hectares this year, primarily attributed to excessive rainfall and subsequent flooding. Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda announced that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is scheduled to conduct an aerial survey of the affected areas on Tuesday, following which the state government will finalize its relief measures. The minister also indicated that continued rainfall could potentially increase the reported extent of crop loss, with Deputy Commissioners slated to conduct joint assessments once land conditions improve.
Rainfall distribution across the state has been varied; certain districts, including Vijayapura, Kalaburagi, Bidar, Yadgir, and Raichur, experienced over 4% excess rainfall between August and September, leading to floods along the Krishna and Bhima rivers and extensive crop losses. Conversely, regions such as Malnad, coastal districts, and parts of Southern Karnataka have registered deficient rainfall during the same period. In response to the immediate needs of affected populations, approximately 75 relief centers are currently operational, providing shelter, food, and essential supplies to 8,919 individuals.
