The 80th round of the National Sample Survey’s (NSS) Socio-Economic Survey, titled ‘Household Social Consumption: Health,’ identifies Kerala as an outlier across several health indicators. The survey highlights Kerala’s distinct health profile, characterized by high morbidity rates, the highest hospitalisation rates nationwide, and a significant reliance on private healthcare services.
Specifically, the data indicates that the Proportion of People Responded as Ailing (PPRA) in Kerala stood at 39.7% during the 15-day survey period, which is approximately three times the national average of 13.1%. This morbidity rate represents a notable increase of about 15 percentage points from the 24.5% recorded in the 75th round (2017-18).
