Nepal’s interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki has unveiled the composition of an interim cabinet, appointing three ministers to key roles following recent political unrest. This development follows widespread anti-graft protests that resulted in at least 72 fatalities, leading to the dissolution of parliament and the resignation of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.
The new ministers include Rameshwor Prassad Khanal, designated as the Minister of Finance. Khanal, previously a finance secretary, led a panel that proposed economic reforms. Kulman Ghising has been assigned the Energy and Irrigation Ministry, having formerly served as the chief of the state power utility. Om Prakash Aryal assumes the Home Ministry.
Interim Prime Minister Karki, a former chief justice and the first woman to lead the nation, formally took office on Sunday, September 14, 2025. Her responsibilities include preparing for national elections scheduled for March 5 and initiating the reconstruction of public structures damaged during the protests, such as the prime minister’s office complex, the Supreme Court, and the parliament building.
The ministers attended an oath swearing ceremony on Monday, September 15, 2025, in Kathmandu, in front of the presidential building, which sustained damage during the recent demonstrations. The protests, described as Nepal’s most significant in decades and reportedly spearheaded by a ‘Gen Z’ group, centered on opposition to widespread corruption.
