A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck Northeastern India on Sunday, September 14, at 16:41:50 IST. The German Research Center for Geosciences identified the earthquake’s depth at 10 kilometers.
Following the event, former Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal issued a call for public vigilance. Officials, as reported by PTI, confirmed no immediate reports of casualties or significant property damage. Internet users on platform X described varied experiences, with some labeling the tremor as ‘strongest’ or ‘horrifying’.
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) designates the region as seismically “very active”, classifying it within Hazard Zone V. This designation stems from its collisional tectonic setting, where the Indian Plate is actively subducting beneath the Eurasian Plate. Historically, the area has been subject to powerful seismic events, including the 1950 Assam–Tibet earthquake (magnitude 8.6) and the 1897 Shillong earthquake (magnitude 8.1).
