Member of Parliament Kalyan Banerjee recently reported a cyber fraud incident where approximately ₹57 lakh was siphoned from a dormant State Bank of India (SBI) account. Banerjee stated that the perpetrators allegedly used his Know Your Customer (KYC) details to carry out the scam.
Following the detection of suspicious transactions, SBI lodged a complaint with the Kolkata Police's cybercrime division. Official sources indicated that cybercriminals gained unauthorized access to Banerjee's SBI account and transferred the funds through a series of unauthorized transactions. The bank subsequently credited the full ₹57 lakh back into Banerjee's Parliament account. Banerjee also raised questions regarding how his account information and balance became known to the perpetrators, and highlighted concerns about the absence of a dedicated anti-cyber fraud unit.
