Public Sentiment in U.S. Toward Israel Shifts Amid Gaza Conflict

The recent conflict in Gaza has coincided with a demonstrated shift in American public and Jewish sentiment regarding Israel, according to various surveys. A New York Times poll indicated that for the first time since its inception in 1998, a higher percentage of U.S. voters expressed sympathy for Palestinians than for Israelis.

Among American Jews, a demographic traditionally strong in its support for Israel, there has been an observable increase in criticism directed at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government concerning the Gaza operations. A Washington Post survey revealed that a majority of American Jews believe Israel has committed war crimes, with four in ten holding the view that Israel is guilty of genocide—a charge the Israeli government denies.

This evolving public perception extends to political spheres, creating new incentives for moderate Democrats in Congress to consider more stringent approaches to Israel, including potential adjustments to U.S. military aid. Furthermore, the shifts are bipartisan, as younger evangelical Christians are reportedly diverging from the views of older generations within their community regarding Israel’s role in the conflict.
