The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led regime, under Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, has approved the formation of a multi-member panel to conduct a Social Justice Survey. This decision was made during a Cabinet meeting in Chennai on Thursday, October 29, 2026.

The survey aligns with an announcement made by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar in June, stating that the state would conduct the survey after the Union Government completed its caste enumeration. Political parties have widely called for a caste census or survey, though approaches have varied.

Previously, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) advocated for a caste census alongside the general Census during their time in power. The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) had formed a commission in 2020 to determine methodologies for collecting caste data, but this initiative was not renewed by the subsequent DMK government.

The Union government has indicated that caste will be included in the 2027 Population Census, which will gather demographic, socio-economic, and cultural information.
