The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced the indefinite suspension of Mumbai Monorail operations, commencing September 20. This planned halt is designed to facilitate extensive system upgrades, signalling integration, and fleet refurbishment. As stated by the agency, the initiative will allow for faster integration of new rolling stock and the deployment of an advanced Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system. The CBTC system, being indigenously developed in Hyderabad, will mark its first implementation on Mumbai’s monorail. Furthermore, existing rakes are slated for full-scale refurbishment, and personnel will undergo specialized training in preparation for future operations. The MMRDA indicates these enhancements are aimed at ensuring safer, smoother, and more reliable services for the public. The Mumbai Monorail, inaugurated in February 2014, currently stands as India’s only operational monorail network.
