In response to a reported increase in dog bite incidents, the Uttar Pradesh government has introduced new regulations concerning the management of stray dogs. Under these measures, a stray dog involved in a first bite incident will be detained for 10 days at an Animal Birth Control (ABC) Centre, where it will receive treatment and be kept under observation. Before its release, the dog will be fitted with a microchip to enable future monitoring of its behavior.
Should the same dog be involved in a second bite incident, a three-member team will conduct an investigation into the circumstances of the attack. If this investigation determines that the attack was unprovoked, the dog will be placed into permanent detention at the ABC Centre. The policy indicates that adoption would be the only alternative to indefinite institutionalisation for such dogs.
