An alleged rape of a second-year MBBS student at a private college in West Bengal’s Pashchim Bardhaman district on Friday night has intensified public discussion regarding women’s safety in the state. The incident prompted parents of a junior doctor, who was allegedly raped and murdered in August last year at RG Kar Medical College, to speak out and demand justice for the latest victim.
The West Bengal Doctors’ Forum (WBDF) stated that the incident exposes systemic negligence, silence, and apathy from state authorities and institutional administrations, asserting that women in West Bengal continue to face violence despite promises of safety. The forum called for immediate judicial intervention by the Chief Justice of India to address these perceived recurring failures.
Junior doctor Anupam Roy also condemned the incident, alleging that college authorities are attempting a cover-up. BJP MP Sukanta Majumdar criticized Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her administration, claiming that West Bengal has become a “nightmare for women’s safety” and a “safe haven for rapists and criminals” under her rule.
