West Bengal Weather Outlook: IMD Predicts Significant Rainfall in Early October

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather forecast indicating widespread rainfall across West Bengal during the first week of October.

A weather system originating from the Bay of Bengal, initially a low-pressure area that intensified into a depression, is projected to become a deep depression before making landfall along the South Odisha-North Andhra Pradesh coasts on the night of October 2 or early October 3. This system is drawing moisture, contributing to the anticipated wet conditions.

For South Bengal, light to moderate rainfall is expected on October 1, with heavy rain (7-11 cm) particularly in North and South 24 Parganas. On October 2, heavy to very heavy rain (7-20 cm) is forecast for coastal South 24 Parganas, Purba, and Paschim Medinipur. As the system moves inland, Purulia and Paschim Bardhaman may experience heavy to very heavy rain (7-20 cm) on October 3, with potential impacts on transportation. Birbhum and Murshidabad are predicted to receive heavy rain (7-11 cm) on October 4. Rainfall is expected to gradually decrease in South Bengal after October 5, though light to moderate showers may persist until October 7.

In North Bengal, heavy to very heavy rain (7-20 cm) is anticipated on October 1, 3, and 4 in districts including Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, and Alipurduar. This significant rainfall carries an increased risk of landslides in the region’s hilly areas.
