U.S. President Donald Trump recently stated that he conversed with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, claiming that Modi had indicated India would cease its purchases of Russian oil. Mr. Trump reportedly warned that if India did not comply with this understanding, "massive tariffs" on Indian goods would persist.
Following these remarks, India reportedly denied that any such conversation occurred regarding a commitment to discontinue Russian oil imports. In response to India's reported denial, Mr. Trump reiterated his position, stating that if India chose to dispute his account, it would continue to face significant tariffs.
The acquisition of Russian oil has been identified as a key point of tension in trade negotiations between Washington and New Delhi.
