The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), spearheaded by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has secured a third consecutive term in the Assam Assembly elections, held on Monday, May 4, 2026. The alliance won a total of 102 seats out of the 126 contested.

The BJP independently secured 82 seats, surpassing the simple majority threshold of 64. Its regional partners, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), each contributed 10 seats to the alliance’s victory.

Conversely, the Congress-led alliance garnered 19 seats, marking its weakest electoral showing since losing power in Assam in 2016. Among its allies, only the Raijor Dal managed to win a single seat. Following the results, Bhanwar Jitendra Singh, the Congress Assam poll in-charge, resigned, accepting accountability for the party’s performance. Additionally, State Congress president Gaurav Gogoi lost his seat in Jorhat to the BJP candidate, and Lurinjyoti Gogoi, president of the allied Assam Janata Party, also did not win.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who retained his Jalukbari constituency for a sixth time, expressed gratitude to the people of Assam and affirmed the alliance’s commitment to delivering on its election pledges.
