Former U.S. President Donald Trump recently proposed that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) impose tariffs on Chinese goods. In a letter to NATO nations, Trump advocated for tariffs ranging from 50 to 100 percent, to remain in effect until the conclusion of the Ukraine war. He argued that such measures would reduce China’s influence over Russia, stating that some alliance members’ continued imports of Russian oil had “greatly weakened” NATO’s leverage.
In response to these calls for sanctions, Beijing issued a statement emphasizing that “war cannot solve problems” and further stressed that sanctions would only serve to “complicate them,” addressing the broader context of the Ukraine conflict and international relations.
