Prominent Malayalam literary critic and writer M. Leelavathy experienced a cyberattack after remarks she made about the humanitarian situation in Gaza were published. During her 98th birthday, Ms. Leelavathy had stated she found it difficult to eat while thinking of ‘starving children with empty stomachs in Gaza.’ The online report of her comments subsequently led to a social media backlash, prompting the outlet to remove the article. Responding to the criticism, Ms. Leelavathy emphasized that her sentiments were driven by ‘motherly affection’ for all children, irrespective of their background, and had ‘no politics behind it.’ Kerala Education Minister V. Sivankutty subsequently expressed solidarity with Ms. Leelavathy, characterizing her remarks as stemming from humanity and condemning the online attacks against her.
