The final stage of the Vuelta a Espana was abandoned in Madrid following pro-Palestinian protests that involved demonstrators entering and occupying parts of the race course, including Gran Via.
Police had deployed over 1,000 officers in the Spanish capital in anticipation of demonstrations. As a result of the abandonment, Jonas Vingegaard, who was leading prior to the final stage, was declared the winner.
This incident occurred after a series of earlier protests throughout the current Vuelta against the Israel-Premier Tech team. These previous demonstrations had led to stages being shortened, rider crashes, and expressed concerns about rider safety, prompting the Israel-Premier Tech team to race in modified jerseys without their team name in the preceding week.
Organizers confirmed the official conclusion of the race and Vingegaard’s victory, while noting that the status of a winning ceremony remained uncertain due to the large number of protesters in downtown Madrid.
