West Bengal BJP Plans Over 1,000 Citizenship Amendment Act Outreach Camps

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal is preparing to establish more than 1,000 camps across the state to facilitate applications under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). This initiative follows recent festive periods and precedes upcoming elections, with a stated aim to encourage individuals, particularly Hindus from Bangladesh residing in the region, to seek citizenship.

The party's primary focus for these outreach efforts will be districts bordering Bangladesh, including North 24 Parganas, Nadia, Cooch Behar, and Uttar Dinajpur. Beyond BJP units, the drive is expected to involve other Hindu organizations and various local clubs. To equip participants, a workshop led by BJP General Secretary (Organisation) B L Santosh was conducted, providing training to party workers, leaders, and representatives of affiliated groups on the provisions of the CAA.

BJP leaders have stated that the implementation of CAA has been a core party agenda. They claim the state's Chief Minister has advised eligible individuals against applying under the Act, and further assert that the CAA is intended for Hindus. The party also suggests that the CAA and associated identification processes could assist in identifying fraudulent or deceased voters and individuals deemed "illegal Muslim immigrants" within West Bengal.
