UK Formally Recognizes State of Palestine to Advance Peace Efforts

The United Kingdom has formally recognized the state of Palestine, a decision announced by Prime Minister Starmer. In a video message, Starmer stated that this action is intended to “revive the hope of peace and a two-state solution” and ensure “a safe and secure Israel, alongside a viable Palestinian state.” The recognition is provisionally based on the 1967 borders, which predate Israel’s occupation of the Gaza Strip and West Bank. Prime Minister Starmer reportedly engaged with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu before the public announcement.

International reactions varied following the UK’s move. The United States rejected the action. Australia’s Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, indicated that further diplomatic steps, including the establishment of relations and embassies, would be contingent upon the Palestinian Authority’s progress on reform commitments. Canada’s Prime Minister commented that recognizing the state of Palestine, led by the Palestinian Authority, serves to empower those who seek peaceful coexistence and the cessation of Hamas’s activities.
