The Delhi High Court has directed the Election Commission of India (ECI) to expedite the registration process for a newly formed political party. This directive was issued in light of the anticipated announcement of the Tamil Nadu elections in January next year.
The court stipulated that the ECI should complete the necessary verification process, preferably within a period of six weeks. The petitioner argued that the party, constituted on April 9 in Coimbatore, faced potential challenges if registration was delayed, specifically regarding its ability to contest elections under a common symbol.
The ECI informed the court that it had, on October 13, requested the state's Chief Electoral Officer to conduct a physical verification, including confirming the swearing of 20 individual affidavits by party members. The ECI noted that it was awaiting the officer's response. The High Court further instructed that following the verification process, the ECI must take appropriate action for the party's registration.
